South Africa has long been a melting pot for many
nations, cultures and traditions due to its strategic location along the
Cape Sea route. Situated half-way between east and west, the diversity
of its people has ensured that an International fusion style of cuisine
has evolved, influenced by Europe, India, China and Malaysia. The quality
of local produce is supreme and favourable exchange rates ensure that
eating out in South Africa is fantastic value for money!
Local
specialities sit side-by-side with International dishes on most restaurant
menus. Not to be missed is the CapeDutch cuisine, which originated in
Cape Town in the 17thCentury and is a mixture of European peasant cooking,
flavoured with herbs and spices from the east. The Asian influence is
strong and curry lovers
will find many excellent dishes to tantalise the palate! Seafood is extremely
popular and particularly good value for money and freshly caught Crayfish,
calamari, oysters and abalone are widely available in the coastal regions.
Should you find yourself in Cape Town during May you will be able to enjoy
the Cape Gourmet Festival. This annual event is a two-week long
extravaganza of fine wining and dining, with most CapeTown restaurants
taking part! During July, Knysna, on the Garden Route, plays host to the
10 day long Oyster Festival. Another gourmet event during July, and not
to be missed is the Bastille Day commemorations at Franschhoek in the
Winelands, a food and wine event par excellence!
Inland you can sample local game, such as impala, kudu, nyala or ostrich,
which are definitely tastier than beef, and with less cholesterol. Don't
miss out on the chance to have a braai, or barbeque, either during the
day or under the African stars at night.
South Africa is currently enjoying international recognition as one of
the foremost wine producers in the World today. The Winelands region of
the Cape is easily accessible from Cape Town, and of particular interest
will be Stellenbosch, a mere 25 km from Cape Town and Franschhoek
which is within an hours' drive from the City. These areas, along with
nearby Paarl and the Breede River valley consistently produce some of
South Africa's finest wines.
The Winelands region is delightfully picturesque with rolling hills and
valleys
surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. In this area you will find the
highest standards of accommodation, from luxury resorts to cosy guest
houses. By visiting the Winelands you are assured the best in fine dining
and of course, world class wines!
